Last week, I wrote about how the same failure patterns appear across different industries.
A major root cause is hidden in plain sight.
You’ve likely seen what this looks like. A decision is made, with clear direction. The message is consistent and everyone across teams seem aligned.
To anyone on the outside, it looks like progress.
But something underneath has already changed.
According to Gallup, only one in three employees strongly agree their opinions count at work.
That number has been consistent, even as organizations invest heavily in alignment and communication.
So something else must be happening.
In many environments, alignment doesn’t increase because understanding improves.
It seems to increase because fewer opposing signals are being expressed.
Questions surface less directly. Concerns are softened before or even if they’re shared.
Disagreement becomes harder to hold in the room.
You can feel it before you can explain it. Nothing formally changes, but the system begins to narrow.
Not all at once, but gradually.
Fewer options get voiced, fewer paths stay open.
The system is still there but there’s less room to move.
Alignment often appears to increase after the system has already lost the ability to surface disagreement.
From that point forward, decisions continue, but they’re made with less signal.
Fewer perspectives reach the point where choices are formed and alternative interpretations fall away.
Not because they were resolved. In many cases, they were never fully expressed.
This is what makes the pattern repeat across organizations.
The system doesn’t fail because it lacks alignment. It fails because it reaches alignment too quickly.
